I hear it all the time; patients come into my office and tell me about the traumatic experience that caused their dental anxiety and kept them from returning to the dentist, sometimes for years. I hate to hear that so many people are afraid to go to the dentist because no one should have to feel scared and anxious about a dental visit, and everyone deserves a healthy smile they’re proud to show others.
Fortunately, the caring team at Dental Care of Corona offers a range of sedation options to help you stay calm and receive the care you need.
Dental Sedation in Corona
As a periodontist, I see patients whose dental anxiety has caused them to neglect their oral health. This often leads to advanced gum disease or tooth loss.
My goal for every patient is to maintain a healthy smile for a lifetime, and part of what makes that possible is dental sedation. I’m certified to administer three types of sedation, including the following:
- Nitrous oxide — For mild anxiety, this colorless, odorless gas can make you feel calm during your appointment. I recommend nitrous oxide if you need to drive home after your visit because it wears off quickly.
- Oral sedation — If you have more severe dental anxiety, you may want to consider a prescription sedative pill. You’ll take the medication before you arrive for your procedure. That way, you’ll already be relaxed when you get to our office. Because the effects last for several hours, you will need a driver to take you home afterward.
- IV sedation — I usually reserve IV sedation for severe anxiety or if you have special needs or require numerous dental treatments. With IV sedation, you’ll be in a semi-conscious state so you can respond to what I say, but you probably won’t remember your visit. I am proud to offer this service in our Corona dental office. Just like with oral sedation, you’ll need someone to drive you to and from your appointment.
