You take a sip of coffee and feel a sudden jolt. You tip back your water bottle and feel the same tinge in your tooth (or teeth). This can happen on rare occasions, but if it’s consistent, recurring, or getting worse, it’s important to call my dental office for guidance. Pain and discomfort are not normal and should always be evaluated.
The cause of sensitive teeth varies from patient to patient. For example, some patients find they’re brushing too hard and compromising their enamel. Others are going too heavy on the teeth whitening gel. Yet, others are experiencing gum recession or have an emerging cavity. Until I investigate the cause, it’s really a guessing game.
What the culprits of tooth sensitivity do share in common is this: If you’re experiencing an ongoing sensitive tooth, it’s likely the tooth has been compromised in some way.
Your Evaluation in My Corona Dental Office
It’s important to note that sensitivity and pain are not equal. It’s vital to assess both, but pain that keeps you awake (or when accompanied by swelling) is a dental emergency, and you should call my dental office as soon as possible.
At your dental appointment, I’ll provide a visual exam and x-rays to determine the cause of the sensitivity. I’ll be on the lookout for every possibility, but most commonly:
- Tooth Decay
- Root Canal Infection
- Gum Recession
- Compromised Enamel
When I discover the root cause, I’ll treat it accordingly.
Ways to Avoid Tooth Sensitivity
Of course, I’m generalizing these tips because there are many causes of tooth sensitivity.
However, here are a few things to consider:
- Teeth Whitening: Always whiten your teeth under the supervision of my team. Some products or store-bought kits can leak onto the gums, causing sensitivity.
- Brushing too Hard: I recommend gentle but firm pressure. A team member can provide a refresher or tutorial.
- Visit My Dental Office: You should visit me twice yearly for checkups and teeth cleanings to reduce your risk of decay, root infections, and gum disease.
