Many people dread going to the dentist; for some, just the thought of a dental appointment causes stress and anxiety. At Dental Care of Corona, we understand the fear associated with dental treatment, but we also want you to achieve the best oral health possible. That’s why we offer sedation dentistry to our patients.

So, if you use sedation dentistry, what are some tips for a smooth recovery afterward? Keep reading to learn more.

Our Sedation Offerings

At Dental Care of Corona, we offer the following types of sedation to keep you comfortable and relaxed:

Nitrous oxide – Also known as laughing gas, this mild sedation is safe for all patients and keeps you calm during dental treatment.

Oral conscious sedation – We can give you a pill to take before you arrive for your dental appointment. It will relax you and keep you calm during your procedure.

IV sedation – For severe anxiety or lengthy appointments, we offer intravenous sedation to put you in a semi-conscious state. You likely won’t even remember your appointment.

Post-Sedation Care Tips

Depending on the type of sedation your dentist recommends, here are some tips for a smooth recovery:

Nitrous oxide – We administer this mild sedation through a nasal mask, but the effects don’t last more than a few minutes after we stop the flow of the medication. You can drive home from your dental appointment and return to your normal day.

Oral conscious sedation – You will need a driver to and from your dental appointment for this type of sedation. Your recovery may take up to 24 hours, so plan to take the rest of the day to relax at home. Also, you shouldn’t drive, drink alcohol, or operate heavy machinery for 24 hours.

IV sedation – IV sedation requires that you have a driver both to and from your appointment. You should expect the effects of IV sedation to last up to 24 hours. You will probably feel drowsy, so plan to rest and limit your activities when you get home. If you feel nauseous, drink water or a carbonated beverage and eat light foods such as crackers and yogurt.

Also, avoid driving, drinking alcohol, or operating heavy machinery for 24 hours.
