Tooth loss can affect nearly every aspect of your life. With missing teeth, eating and speaking become challenging, and you may feel shy or embarrassed about having an incomplete smile. Untreated tooth loss can also increase your risk for infection, heart disease, stroke, and other health concerns.

Fortunately, modern dentistry has a permanent solution to tooth loss: dental implants. Dental implants are the gold standard for tooth replacement because they're permanent and fully replace a tooth, from root to crown. With a dental implant, you can restore your ability to bite and chew food, speak clearly, smile, and socialize confidently. Dental implants have improved countless lives and can drastically improve your quality of life.

What Causes Tooth Loss?

More than 156 million Americans live with tooth loss and are missing at least one tooth. Many factors can influence tooth loss, such as:

  • Dental decay
  • Gum disease
  • Infection
  • Trauma
  • Injury

Whatever the reason may be for your missing teeth, your dentist can help you and create a personalized treatment plan to restore your smile.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant consists of three parts: the small titanium post, the abutment piece, and the artificial tooth. The titanium post is placed in the jawbone, the abutment piece connects the artificial tooth to the implant, and the artificial tooth can be a single crown, bridge, or denture.

Research shows threaded dental implants are more successful than smooth ones because they're more secure. Most American dental implants use titanium because it's strong, safe, and reliable, and at Dental Care of Corona, we only use surgical-grade titanium.

Studies show that dental implants have a 98.6 percent success rate, making them the most successful of any comparable procedure.

How Can Dental Implants Improve My Smile?

Dental implants have many life-enhancing advantages compared to other removable tooth replacement options:

  • They restore your smile's strength and function.
  • They are permanent, so you don't have to worry about removing or losing them.
  • They are stable, so they will not shift or slip in the mouth while talking or eating.
  • They promote jawbone health and reduce the risk of jawbone deterioration.
  • They look and feel just like natural teeth.
  • They are low-maintenance. You can brush, floss, and care for your dental implants like natural teeth.
  • They support your facial muscles, leading to a more youthful and energized appearance.
  • They are much stronger than removable dentures.
  • They are fully customized to meet your unique dental needs and fit your oral anatomy.
  • They boost your confidence!

The Dental Implant Process

Before dental implant placement, your dentist will evaluate your oral health and determine if you're a good candidate for the procedure. We will look at radiographs, medical history, lifestyle, and more to determine this. Dental implants are ideal for people with strong, healthy jawbones and gums. Patients with low jawbone density or gum disease may require pretreatment before dental implant placement, such as bone grafting or gum tissue grafting.

The dental team then takes a detailed impression of your mouth so your dental implants are precise and comfortable. We want your new smile to look, feel, and function as naturally as possible. Our dental team also takes your skin tone, facial structure, mouth shape, remaining teeth (if any), and other characteristics into account, so your new smile is complementary to your appearance.

On the day of the procedure, your dentist numbs the area and surgically places the thin, titanium post into the jawbone beneath the gums. Titanium is biocompatible, meaning it's safe for your body, and your body will accept the implant instead of rejecting it. Over several weeks, the jawbone and gums will heal and integrate with the implant post. This process of the jaw and implant growing together is osseointegration. Your dentist will provide you with a temporary crown or denture until your final dental prosthetics are ready.

Once the jaws and gums heal, you will have another visit with your dentist so we can ensure everything is healthy and exactly as it should be. During this time, we will attach the final artificial tooth or teeth to the dental implants. If we need to adjust the size, shape, or shade of the tooth, we will do so at this time. Ultimately, we will ensure that you have the healthy, attractive, and natural-looking smile you've always wanted.
